[Audacity-users] Request

Example - I have an audio file - the format could be wav, aiff, mpeg, avi -
whatever.

In that audio file there are many things - voice, music, background sound
effects, etc.

1. can Audacity separate those?
2. if so, what is that feature/function called?

Once I know what I am looking for, I can look up in the documentation how
to do it.

I just don't even know what that is called.

The short answer is "No, you cannot do that with anything built into
Audacity." The popular analogy is, imagine trying to extract the eggs,
flour, milk, etc. from a cake that's already baked. When many sounds are
combined in an audio source, it's impossible to extract the individual
elements.

Depending on the audio in question, you might be able to emphasize
certain elements and minimize others with extreme and careful EQ, but
you will always hear the other sounds.

That said, there are expensive forensic-type audio tools that claim to
be able to mostly isolate some elements, but those tools go way beyond
Audacity's features and capabilities. You can hear some of the results
in attempts to turn old mono music into true stereo. Even their ability
is limited, but the technology is getting better all the time.

Thanks for that - I appreciate your response.

However, if I wanted to do like you said, emphasize some audio but
attenuate others, what would I look for in the documentation?
