[Audacity-users] Editing sound directly upon an MP4 video file

Hi guys,

I'm a Archlinux user who has been using Audacity on & off for years.
Many thanks!

Lately I've been getting into video [1] and my problem use case is
that I need to sync a WAV to replace the MP4's (bad quality) audio
track. I think I can just about do this, but I can't export back to
the MP4!

Loading Image...

Am I missing some sort of FFMPEG integration? I have ffmpeg version
3.0.1 installed.

Be grateful for any advice or tips here.

Thanks again,

Hi Kai,

Just watched your video and I can see your problem. I think what you
need is a video editor. This will work with the video and the audio
simultaneously. I'm assuming you have extracted the "bad" audio from an
avi/mp4 etc. file. The audio is decoded from the video file and when
opened with Audacity is presented to you to do what you want with it -
the audio stays tied up with the video in the original file... as far as
I know, Audacity does not have the capability to re-encode audio into a
video e.g. .avi or mp4 file... but I'm willing to be corrected!

Only on a proper video editor, you should be able to replace the "bad"
audio track with the simultaneously recorded "good" audio track, and the
video editor should allow you to move it forward and backward in time to
match the video in case it winds up out of sync.

Hi Allistair,

I am quite sure what I need is called an "audio editor". One that can
edit audio with the ubiquitous MP4 file format.

I don't need to look at the image stream of the video since the
original (bad) audio is all I need to match up the good audio.

Kind regards,

How about exporting a FLAC audio track from Audacity and using mkvtools
(https://mkvtoolnix.download/) to multiplex your video track with the FLAC
audio track into an MKV file? This would preserve all of the quality of the
audio track and give you a losslessly compressed audio track which avoids
wasting space storing audio. The programs at https://mkvtoolnix.download/
are free software, licensed under the GNU GPL v2.

Additionally, you could use ffmpeg/avconv or similar program to make that
MKV file into a WebM file for distribution via the web.

All the modern video players I use play MKV files with most common audio
codecs (including FLAC) and video codecs.

Why did you change the subject of the original email? You broke the
conversation/thread in Gmail.

If it was to jump hoops removing the audio for editing and
re-attaching it, I would just use ffmpeg.

Nonetheless, I'd rather not jump hoops.

Because my response was a followup and it is right and proper to make sure
the subject tracks what one is discussing. If what you say about Gmail is
true then Gmail is broken and I suggest you pick a mail service that offers
proper threading and treats you better by not spying on your activities.
Threading is not properly done by subject header changes, that's long
understood to be a bad idea. I'm receiving the same posts from the mailing
list you are and many other email readers that handle threading properly
confirm that proper threading works fine regardless of the subject header.

I don't know what you mean by "jump hoops". What I proposed would give you
the ability to edit the audio, remux the edited audio to the video and
deliver a result in a playable file using a modern container format. Also
this entire operation can be done entirely with free software (thus
respecting your freedom to run, inspect, share, and modify the software
involved) and with no loss in quality. As a bonus, Matroska also lets you
add other interesting things including multiple audio/video tracks,
captions, fonts, and thumbnail images.

Audacity is not a movie editor, it's an audio editor and won't (as far as I
know) let you edit data as you initially described. I don't believe ffmpeg
will let you do what you initially aimed to do in precisely the way you
said you wanted to do the job. But my suggestion would get you something
viable at the end that achieves a comparable result. I thought mailing list
readers would find it helpful.

hi
what you need is a video editor for the reason that as far as I know mp4 is
a multiplexed format , you have to un-multiplex it first , strip the audio
off it and replaced it with yours and then re-multiplex it back to mp4 .
THANKYOU DAVE 211
