Discussion:
[Audacity-users] Audacity not holding equalization settings

Audacity 2.1.1, Windows 7, Dell laptop.

In playing around with the equalization settings for the project I posted
here about two weeks or so ago, the equalization settings on my Audacity
were set different than what I had them at before I started that project.
That was all on Audacity 2.1.0, then I upgraded. Then, for an unrelated
project, I changed the equalization settings to ones I know I can use to
achieve a better sound for what I'm recording. In previous versions of
Audacity, this would have stayed where it was until I changed it. In this
version however, even if I apply the effect to a piece of audio, the
equalization settings revert to where they were when I started.

That Equalization bug was fixed in 2.1.2 which was released back in
January.

You can download 2.1.2 from us here:
http://audacityteam.org/download/windows .

Only our site can be guaranteed to have the latest Audacity release.

If you are not already doing so I recommend subscribing here:
http://lists.audacityteam.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audacity-announce

then you will receive an e-mail when there is a new release.

Ah, thanks. Also, the problem that Tony has pointed out on this list a while
back where the old version of Audacity still shows in the programs and
features list on the computer, but uninstalling that uninstalls the latest
version still hasn't been fixed, unless that was fixed in 2.1.2.

From what I vaguely recall of Tony's issue, it may have been a problem
of installing multiple versions of Audacity side by side instead of one at
a time. If you want multiple installations you should use different folders
for each installation.

If someone wants to test in 2.1.2 and can give accurate steps to
reproduce the problem, then it could be looked at.

Thanks

Ok, this is interesting. Two things,
1. Regarding my version of Audacity with the equalization problem, I for
some reason had it in my head I was running 2.1.1, but I'm actually
experiencing this problem on 2.1.2.
Now on to the multiple installation problem, in the programs and features
list on my computer, I see Audacity 2.1.0, installed on 11/6/2015. The next
program on the list is Audacity 2.1.2, installed on 5/11/2016. Uninstalling
2.1.0 will actually remove 2.1.2.

In 2.1.2 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows you should not
experience the issue with Equalization where you could open the effect,
change the curve, apply the effect, then when you reopen the effect the
curve is flattened.

However in 2.1.2 saving user presets does not work. The curve you
saved as a preset will not be recalled if you reselect the preset. Use
"Save/Manage Curves..." to save curves and "Select Curve" to recall
saved curves.

For clarification, when uninstalling 2.1.0, it also removes the listing for
2.1.2 in programs and features. Uninstalling and reinstalling is something I
will do, but is there anything the developers can do to make sure the old
version doesn't linger on the computer when the new one is installed over
top of the old?

For clarification, when uninstalling 2.1.0, it also removes the listing for
2.1.2 in programs and features. Uninstalling and reinstalling is something I
will do, but is there anything the developers can do to make sure the old
version doesn't linger on the computer when the new one is installed over
top of the old?
Thanks for clarifying what the problem is. We do, for each release, test
installing over the top of the previous release, but may not have looked
at Add/Remove Programs on every occasion.

Anyway, I tested on Windows 7 and Windows 10. It looks like the
problem only occurs when overwriting installation of 2.1.0 or previous
and not when overwriting installation of 2.1.1 or later. I think it happened
because in 2.1.1 we changed the instructions in the installer so that we
wouldn't have to manually change the Audacity version number in the
installer file at each release time. See:
http://www.jrsoftware.org/isfaq.php#appid .

I noticed when testing on Windows 7 that every other application I
overwrote-installed (such as Avidemux or 7-Zip) had the same problem
of leaving the old entry behind in Programs and Features. Those
applications did not leave their old entry behind on Windows 10. I think
we could force remove old Programs and Features entries for Audacity
for the same install path, but given the above behaviour on Windows 7
there seems a chance it might be a lot of effort to get it working there.

Ok, this is interesting. Two things,
1. Regarding my version of Audacity with the equalization problem, I
for some reason had it in my head I was running 2.1.1, but I'm
actually experiencing this problem on 2.1.2.
In 2.1.2 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows you should not
experience the issue with Equalization where you could open the effect,
change the curve, apply the effect, then when you reopen the effect the
curve is flattened.
However in 2.1.2 saving user presets does not work. The curve you saved as a
preset will not be recalled if you reselect the preset. Use "Save/Manage
Curves..." to save curves and "Select Curve" to recall saved curves.
Post by Bob cavanaugh
Now on to the multiple installation problem, in the programs and
features list on my computer, I see Audacity 2.1.0, installed on
11/6/2015. The next program on the list is Audacity 2.1.2, installed
on 5/11/2016.
Uninstalling
2.1.0 will actually remove 2.1.2.
I suggest you exit then uninstall all versions of Audacity, so there are no
Audacity versions listed in "Programs and Features". Then install
2.1.2 from the link above.
If you also require to install an older version of Audacity, install it into
a different folder than where you installed 2.1.2.

Ah, thanks. Also, the problem that Tony has pointed out on this list
a while back where the old version of Audacity still shows in the
programs and features list on the computer, but uninstalling that
uninstalls the latest version still hasn't been fixed, unless that
was fixed in 2.1.2.
Thanks, Bob.
Reports of possible bugs are best posted to Audacity Forum or our

From what I vaguely recall of Tony's issue, it may have been a problem
of installing multiple versions of Audacity side by side instead of
one at a time. If you want multiple installations you should use
different folders for each installation.
If someone wants to test in 2.1.2 and can give accurate steps to
reproduce the problem, then it could be looked at.
Thanks

2.1.0 will actually remove 2.1.2.
I suggest you exit then uninstall all versions of Audacity, so there
are no Audacity versions listed in "Programs and Features". Then
install
2.1.2 from the link above.
If you also require to install an older version of Audacity, install
it into a different folder than where you installed 2.1.2.

Reports of possible bugs are best posted to Audacity Forum or our
feedback address, or they may not be seen.
Post by Bob cavanaugh
From what I vaguely recall of Tony's issue, it may have been a problem
of installing multiple versions of Audacity side by side instead of
one at a time. If you want multiple installations you should use
different folders for each installation.
If someone wants to test in 2.1.2 and can give accurate steps to
reproduce the problem, then it could be looked at.
Thanks

Audacity 2.1.1, Windows 7, Dell laptop.
In playing around with the equalization settings for the project I
posted here about two weeks or so ago, the equalization settings on
my Audacity were set different than what I had them at before I
started that
project.
Post by Bob cavanaugh
That was all on Audacity 2.1.0, then I upgraded. Then, for an
unrelated project, I changed the equalization settings to ones I
know I can use to achieve a better sound for what I'm recording. In
previous versions of Audacity, this would have stayed where it was
until I changed it. In this version however, even if I apply the
effect to a piece of audio, the equalization settings revert to
where they
were when I started.

For clarification, when uninstalling 2.1.0, it also removes the
listing for
2.1.2 in programs and features. Uninstalling and reinstalling is
something I will do, but is there anything the developers can do to
make sure the old version doesn't linger on the computer when the new
one is installed over top of the old?
Thanks for clarifying what the problem is. We do, for each release, test
installing over the top of the previous release, but may not have looked at
Add/Remove Programs on every occasion.
Anyway, I tested on Windows 7 and Windows 10. It looks like the problem only
occurs when overwriting installation of 2.1.0 or previous and not when
overwriting installation of 2.1.1 or later. I think it happened because in
2.1.1 we changed the instructions in the installer so that we wouldn't have
to manually change the Audacity version number in the installer file at each
http://www.jrsoftware.org/isfaq.php#appid .
I noticed when testing on Windows 7 that every other application I
overwrote-installed (such as Avidemux or 7-Zip) had the same problem of
leaving the old entry behind in Programs and Features. Those applications
did not leave their old entry behind on Windows 10. I think we could force
remove old Programs and Features entries for Audacity for the same install
path, but given the above behaviour on Windows 7 there seems a chance it
might be a lot of effort to get it working there.

Ok, this is interesting. Two things,
1. Regarding my version of Audacity with the equalization problem, I
for some reason had it in my head I was running 2.1.1, but I'm
actually experiencing this problem on 2.1.2.
In 2.1.2 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows you should not
experience the issue with Equalization where you could open the
effect, change the curve, apply the effect, then when you reopen the
effect the curve is flattened.
However in 2.1.2 saving user presets does not work. The curve you
saved as a preset will not be recalled if you reselect the preset. Use
"Save/Manage Curves..." to save curves and "Select Curve" to recall
saved curves.
I suggest you exit then uninstall all versions of Audacity, so there
are no Audacity versions listed in "Programs and Features". Then
install
2.1.2 from the link above.
If you also require to install an older version of Audacity, install
it into a different folder than where you installed 2.1.2.
