Hi,I've been using Audacity for years on Ubuntu without any issues
whatsoever. Ever since I upgraded to 16.04 and installed Audacity, whenever
I attempt to open the application nothing happens. The icon flashes a few
times and then nothing. Nothing at all.Any suggestions of how to
troubleshoot and resolve this issue gratefully received.

What version of Audacity are you using (all three numbers) and where did
you get it from?

Did you do a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 on a fresh partition or upgrade
it in place?

Look in the folder ~/.audacity-data/ for the audacity.cfg file. In that
file,
check where your Audacity temp folder is. By default the temp folder is in
/var/tmp/audacity-<your username>.

In the temp folder, delete any audacity-lock-<your username> file.

If that does not help, delete the entire ~/.audacity-data/ folder.

Hi Gale,

Thanks for your reply.... The version of audacity I have installed is
2.1.2-1 I installed it from Ubuntu Software centre.

There's something very curious, however. There is no ~/.audacity-data/
directory. In /var/tmp/ there's no audacity directory either.

This was a clean install because an upgrade was unsuccessful. Even a clean
install hasn't been a great experience, although better than the upgrade.

I've just cleaned out Audacity and reinstalled in after doing apt-get
autoremove apt-get purge apt-get update etc etc.... Still makes no
difference. Still no ~/.audacity-data/ directory. Also, still the same
version.

Audacity still doesn't launch either.

Any other thoughts?

OK, so you are saying you have never managed to launch Audacity on this
new installation of Ubuntu.

When you launch Audacity do you see no error message and no Audacity
splash screen in the centre of the monitor? The first thing Audacity does
when it launches is look for audio devices. The fact that it has not even
started to write audacity.cfg could suggest a problem with your audio
devices. You could try some of the commands here:
http://www.linuxnix.com/find-sound-card-details-in-linuxunix/

to see if you get sensible output.

If you have external sound cards connected which might not support
Linux, you could try disconnecting them to see if that makes any
difference.

Also how are you launching Audacity? Open a terminal which should
then be in your home directory and just type

audacity

which should try to launch the installed version as you without extra
privileges. What output appears in the terminal?

Audacity still doesn't launch either.
Any other thoughts?
What happens if you try to run audacity from the command line, in,
say, an xterm. That should show you any errors that audacity is throwing
when it fails.

It's possible that a dependency was missed for the package, and you need
to install it manually for audacity to function.

Another thing to look at is whether you have right of access to the
audio on the machine. Is your user in the audio group?

cat /etc/group | grep -i <your user name>

should show audio as one of the groups you belong to.

Thank you both.

It transpires that the issue was ownership of some directories in my /home
directory. Both ~/.gnome2/ and ~/.gnome2_private, but others too. Somehow
this resulted from a fresh install and being something of a novice it didn't
occur to me that there would be some directories that weren't owned by me
which would result and furthermore that given that they did result that they
ought to be owned by me.

Anyhow, I fixed the problem with sudo chown -R me:me /home/me Now when I
click on Audacity it opens as it always used to.

Thanks once again.
