Discussion:
[Audacity-users] possible way to automate this?

Hi all,

I've decided that for my latest audio editing project, I'm going to record a
radio station for a random amount of time, then split it into files, not
unlike what I've done in the past. However, I plan to do it differently this
time, and I'm wondering if there's a way I can automate the process or if I
have to do it manually. Here's what I want to do:

I want to have multiple files of varying lengths. For example, I'd put one
label for the first file at 00:05:06, then two more each 00:05:10 after
that, then 00:05:11 and so on. If that's not clear, I'd have one file that
is 00:05:06, two files that are 00:05:10, 3 files that are 00:05:11, 4 files
that are 00:05:12, and so on. Is there an easy way to automate the process
of making those files, or do I need to manually place the labels in this
case?

Hi Bob
I think what you want is on the file menu under “edit chains\chains” I have never used chains , I assume means you can set up a sequence of events, not real sure where you could get the random part from.

I just did some exploring with that, and it looks like I’d be able to do what I want with little manual intervention, but not quite what I was getting at. It looks like if I were to do it that way, I’d have to set up several chains, each with my desired interval label, then run one right after the other. If there’s an easier way to do it, then I’d like to know, but that will do if there isn’t. I was hoping I could automate the entire sequence in one step, but that’ll have to do if there isn’t a way to do that.

The next one would be 5 that are each 5:13, then 6 that are 5:14. Are you starting to get the pattern? If you're asking how far I'm going to go with this, the answer is I really don't know, that will have to wait until I actually record what I want to.

The next one would be 5 that are each 5:13, then 6 that are 5:14. Are you starting to get the pattern? If you're asking how far I'm going to go with this, the answer is I really don't know, that will have to wait until I actually record what I want to.

Hi all,
I’ve decided that for my latest audio editing project, I’m going to
record a radio station for a random amount of time, then split it
into files, not unlike what I’ve done in the past. However, I plan to
do it differently this time, and I’m wondering if there’s a way I can
I want to have multiple files of varying lengths. For example, I’d
put one label for the first file at 00:05:06, then two more each
00:05:10 after that, then 00:05:11 and so on. If that’s not clear,
I’d have one file that is 00:05:06, two files that are 00:05:10, 3
files that are 00:05:11, 4 files that are 00:05:12, and so on. Is
there an easy way to automate the process of making those files, or
do I need to manually place the labels in this case?

Yes, minutes and seconds. The jump has to do with how I did the regular interval labels in the past. I split one project into 52 files, each 5:05, then split another into 53 files each 5:07, skipping 5:06 inadvertantly. If that odd jump changes your answer, I could just export that manually, then do the rest of the files as I want.

Attached is a Nyquist script that can be run in the Nyquist Prompt.
To use:
1) Select part of a track, then open the Nyquist Prompt effect.
2) Copy and paste the contents from the attached file into the text
box in the Nyquist Prompt effect.
3) Click the OK button.

A new window will pop up with three settings:

"Length of first label (seconds)"
This is the length of the first label. The default length is 300
seconds (5 minutes).

"Number of labels at this length"
Default = 1. This sets the number of labels at the length indicated in
the first control.

"Increase label length by (seconds)"
Default 1 second. When the label has been repeated the number of times
set in the second control, the label length will be increased by this
much for the next labels.

"Number of times to increment label length"
Default 10. This is the number of times that the whole process is repeated.
On each repeat, the number of labels produced at the given length is
increased by 1.

With the default settings it will produce 1 label at 5:00, 2 labels at
5:01, 3 labels at 5:03 and so on up to 10 labels at 5:09.

Enjoy

00:05:10 after that, then 00:05:11 and so on. If that’s not clear,
I’d have one file that is 00:05:06, two files that are 00:05:10, 3
files that are 00:05:11, 4 files that are 00:05:12, and so on. Is
there an easy way to automate the process of making those files, or
do I need to manually place the labels in this case?
Bob

Attached is a Nyquist script that can be run in the Nyquist Prompt.
To use:
1) Select part of a track, then open the Nyquist Prompt effect.
2) Copy and paste the contents from the attached file into the text box in the Nyquist Prompt effect.
3) Click the OK button.

A new window will pop up with three settings:

"Length of first label (seconds)"
This is the length of the first label. The default length is 300 seconds (5 minutes).

"Number of labels at this length"
Default = 1. This sets the number of labels at the length indicated in the first control.

"Increase label length by (seconds)"
Default 1 second. When the label has been repeated the number of times set in the second control, the label length will be increased by this much for the next labels.

"Number of times to increment label length"
Default 10. This is the number of times that the whole process is repeated.
On each repeat, the number of labels produced at the given length is increased by 1.

With the default settings it will produce 1 label at 5:00, 2 labels at 5:01, 3 labels at 5:03 and so on up to 10 labels at 5:09.

Enjoy
Steve

Yes, minutes and seconds. The jump has to do with how I did the regular interval labels in the past. I split one project into 52 files, each 5:05, then split another into 53 files each 5:07, skipping 5:06 inadvertantly. If that odd jump changes your answer, I could just export that manually, then do the rest of the files as I want.

I was wondering why the jump from 5:06 to 5:10. Is this minutes and seconds?

The next one would be 5 that are each 5:13, then 6 that are 5:14. Are you starting to get the pattern? If you're asking how far I'm going to go with this, the answer is I really don't know, that will have to wait until I actually record what I want to.

What's "etc"? What comes next after 5:12 and why?
Steve

Sort of. The plan is to have one file that is 5:06, 2 that are 5:10, 3 that are 5:11, 4 that are 5:12, etc.

5:06, 5:10, 5:11, 5:12...
Is there a pattern?

Hi all,
I’ve decided that for my latest audio editing project, I’m going to
record a radio station for a random amount of time, then split it
into files, not unlike what I’ve done in the past. However, I plan
to do it differently this time, and I’m wondering if there’s a way
I want to have multiple files of varying lengths.
Bob
